Structured deformations as energy minimizers in models of fracture and hysteresis
نویسنده
چکیده
We review recent theories of non-classical, structured deformations and integral representations for their Helmholtz free energy. Energy minimizers for a body undergoing shearing at two di¤erent length scales and for a bar experiencing both smooth extension and macroscopic fractures then are determined, and applications to the shearing of single crystals and to the cohesive fracture of solids are discussed. Yield, hysteresis, and the associated dissipation in two-level shears are shown to arise from instabilities at the microlevel, and the dichotomy between brittle and ductile fracture is related precisely to a critical length of a bar. A model for hysteresis in mechanics using local minimizers of Young measures
A model for effects related to hysteresis in continuum mechanics is introduced. Its key idea is to consider local minimizers of Young measures describing the deformation gradient of a body. These Young measures are defined as limit of a quasi-static evolution by means of a gradient flow with respect to a special “regularized” Wasserstein metric. The model is described for the space-homogenous c...
متن کاملInvertibility and weak continuity of the determinant for the modelling of cavitation and fracture in nonlinear elasticity
In this paper we present and analyze a variational model in nonlinear elasticity that allows for cavitation and fracture. The main idea to unify the theories of cavitation and fracture is to regard both cavities and cracks as phenomena of creation of new surface. Accordingly, we define a functional that measures the area of the created surface. This functional has relationships with the theory ...
متن کاملOn a discrete-to-continuum convergence result for a two dimensional brittle material in the small displacement regime
We consider a two-dimensional atomic mass spring system and show that in the small displacement regime the corresponding discrete energies can be related to a continuum Griffith energy functional in the sense of Γ-convergence. We also analyze the continuum problem for a rectangular bar under tensile boundary conditions and find that depending on the boundary loading the minimizers are either ho...
متن کاملHysteresis: Phenomenon and Modeling in Soil- Water Relationship
Hysteresis has been widely recognized in the soil water relationship. In this paper, a detailed review of hysteresis was performed in relation to its models. So far, different models have been suggested to describe hysteresis in the water retention curve (WRC) that could be categorized into two main groups: conceptual and empirical models. The models in the first group are based on the domain t...
متن کاملA Modification on Applied Element Method for Linear Analysis of Structures in the Range of Small and Large Deformations Based on Energy Concept
In this paper, the formulation of a modified applied element method for linear analysis of structures in the range of small and large deformations is expressed. To calculate deformations in the structure, the minimum total potential energy principle is used. This method estimates the linear behavior of the structure in the range of small and large deformations, with a very good accuracy and low...
